GROWING INSTRUCTIONS – SOIL / COIR

What You Will Need:

  • Microgreen Seeds
  • Soil or Coir
  • 2 Growing Trays Without Holes
  • 1 Growing Tray With Holes

Preparation: Soak seeds for 6-8 hours in cold water – the water should be double the amount of seeds. After 6-8 hours drain and rinse seeds.

Nest the growing tray with holes into a growing tray without holes. Fill the tray with soil-about ½ inch from the top of the tray. Be sure to spread evenly and break down any clumps of soil.

Tamp soil by placing the other growing tray without holes on top and pressing down lightly.

Scatter seeds evenly on top of the soil. Mist seeds lightly to encourage germination.

Blackout: To encourage germination and growth; the Microgreens need to go through a blackout phase.

Stack your tray without holes on top of the other two trays (as if nesting) filled with the seeds. Place a weight on top (about 5-10 Lbs) and set aside until you’re ready to water.

Each day twice a day, lightly mist the Microgreens. When roots begin to show underneath the first tray (around day 3) start misting the bottom tray as well. After each misting, replace the top tray and weight. On the 4th day and until the blackout phase is finished – cover the microgreens with top tray (top to top) to create a dome rather than stacking the tray with the weight.

After roughly 6 days remove the seeds from blackout and place in a well-lit area. Start bottom watering the Microgreens by pouring 1 cup of water into the bottom tray. Mist Microgreens as usual. Repeat twice a day until Microgreens are ready to be harvested.

Harvesting: Once the Microgreens reach roughly 3-4 Inches tall, they are ready to be harvested (8-10 days).
To harvest, use a very sharp knife to cut through the stems just above the soil. Do not wash Microgreens until you are ready to eat them. To store them, place them in a Ziplock bag with a few holes poked in it and place in your refrigerators crisper. They will last for up to a week. Enjoy!

Helpful Tips:

  • If seed hulls are not falling off, gently run your hand through the tops of the Microgreens to loosen them.
  • Sunflower Microgreens are prone to mold and decay. To help combat that use an Anti-Fungal solution and mist each time you water the Microgreens. You can make your own Anti-Fungal spray by combining 2 tablespoons of food-grade hydrogen peroxide with 1 liter of water.

Initial Soak 4 Hours: Soak seeds in cold water for 4 hours.

Plant Directly in Soil: Sunflower seeds are difficult to grow hydroponically so plant directly in soil or coco coir. Spread a thick layer of seeds evenly on top of soil and tamp down gently to ensure contact.

Grow: Mist only as needed to keep soil moist but not damp. Cover seeds until germination. After germination place under a grow light or in front of a bright window so shoots can green up.

Harvest & Enjoy in 7-10 Days: Both the stems and leaves of Sunflower Microgreens are delicious and nutritious. Harvest when about 4 inches tall by cutting off at the soil level with a pair of sharp, clean scissors.

Are Your Seeds Organic? What does Certified Organic and/or USDA Organic Mean?
All Purely Organic Seeds (and many varieties of the other seed brands we carry) are Certified Organic and carry the USDA Organic Seal. This means that our seeds are non-GMO (not genetically modified), and are chemical and pesticide free. They have passed rigorously standards and certified by a USDA Accredited agency. To determine whether the seed packet you're interested in is organic, look for the USDA Organic seal.

Are Your Seeds Heirloom? What are Heirloom Seeds?
Heirloom Seeds (sometimes called Heritage Seeds) are open pollinated vegetable and herb seed strains that have been planted, grown and harvested for several generations (usually more than 30 or 50 years depending on the variety) with consistent results. Heirloom seeds are always non-GMO and are never hybrids. All of our vegetable and herb seeds are heirloom seeds.

Are Your Seeds Non-GMO? What Does Non-GMO Mean?
Non-GMO means seeds (or other products) that were produced without genetic engineering and were not derived from GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). All of our seeds are non-GMO.

Where do Your Seeds Come From?
Most of the seeds offered on our site are USA Origin seeds sourced from certified US based suppliers. We do also source a small number of seeds from other countries. To view the specific origin of any of our current seed offerings, check the seed packet or look in the specifications for "Country of Origin" on any product page.

Are Your Seeds Packed for the Current Growing Season?
All of our seed packets are packed for the current growing season. If stored properly they will provide high germination rates for 1-2 additional years as well.

How Can I Store My Seeds Safely for Use in the Future?
Our seeds will generally retain their high germination rates for several years from the date of purchase. If you're planning on saving your seeds for us in the future, the most important thing to remember that seeds like to be stored where it is cool, dry and dark. The easiest way to ensure this for long term storage at home is to double-seal your seeds inside two zipper style bags and then place them in the freezer. (Make sure you label your seeds for future reference if they're not in original packaging.) When you're ready to plant your seeds, take just the ones you want to use out of the freezer and let them sit on a counter, in a covered container, for a few days to thaw and stabilize before being planted. To preserve germination rates, minimize temperature, light and humidity fluctuations by storing your seeds at the back of the freezer and only taking them out when you're ready to use them.

The Package with my Seeds in was Left Outside in Freezing and/or Rainy Weather. Will the Seeds Still Work?
As long as your seeds have not gotten wet they should work fine. Freezing temperatures will not hurt the seeds.

Are Your Seeds Treated?
No. The USDA Certified Organic Program prohibits the use of treated seeds. All of our seeds -- whether certified organic or not -- are untreated.
