When soil temperature is consistently above 70o F, sow 2-3 seeds each in 8-10" tall mounds. Ensure soil is sandy, well composted, and moist but well-drained with a pH of 6.0-6.5. During growth and fruiting, water regularly at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry. During ripening reduce watering so there is a slight drought. Harvesting Ripe Cantaloupes: When the melon begins to emit a sweet, fruity aroma-and the rind turns from green to golden yellow-it should be ripe and easily pulled from the vine. Try not to let melons fall by themselves to prevent bruising.
